Mount Everest
On the Modern List of the Seven Wonders of the World, Mount Everest is the only one found in Asia. Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world and is located in the Himalayan Mountain range. It is on the border of Nepal and Tibet, which are located in Southwestern Asia, north of India.
Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world. It is measured about 29, 035 feet tall and is 5.5 miles above sea level. Mount Everest also cuts the skyline, which means that it goes higher than the clouds. It was created by the colliding of two earth plates which formed a pyramid shape mountain with three major ridges. Mount Everest is covered by four giant, glaciers the Khumbu glacier, the West Rongbuk glacier, the Rongbuk glacier and the Kangshung glacier. Mount Everest is covered by snow and the winds can gust as fast as 117 mph.
There are many explorers who have climbed Mount Everest, but not all have survived. In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and his guide Tenzing Norgay were the very first to reach the top of Mount Everest. A Swiss expedition was led to the top in 1956. The first American to reach the top was James W. Whittaker in 1963. The first woman to reach the top was Junko Tabei of Japan in 1975. Finally, the most famous was George Everest; he led a British mapping expedition to the region in 1856 and called the mountain Peak XV. The mountain was named after him because he explored it, studied it and mapped the area which helped climbers understand the terrain.Everest never did climb it, but made a major contribution for others.
